Should I See a Chiropractor or Massage Therapist?

There are significant differences between a chiropractor and a massage therapist. If you’re dealing with sore muscles from stress or overuse, a massage can help. Yet, if you have serious or persistent pain, a known injury, or a possible medical condition, you should see a chiropractor. A chiropractor can provide medical diagnosis and treatment using musculoskeletal options to restore your body to alignment.

Are Chiropractors Doctors?

Chiropractors are Doctors of Chiropractic or DCs. While a chiropractor’s degree isn’t the same as a medical doctor or MD, they do go through extensive training in a doctorate program. Chiropractors must attend classes and participate in clinical training in subjects such as chemistry, anatomy, orthopedics, pathology and more.

During their education, chiropractors spend hundreds of hours learning how the body’s systems work to be able to find the root cause of pain for proper treatment. Plus, they have extensive licensure requirements just like MDs do.

What Does a Chiropractor Do?

Chiropractors spend their time treating the nervous and musculoskeletal systems of the body. They typically take a holistic approach without the use of drugs or invasive procedures such as surgery. Chiropractors use treatments such as manipulation and stretching to treat pain in the body including:

  • Headaches
  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Hip pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Herniated discs

At your first visit, your chiropractor will perform exams to find the root cause of your pain. From there, the chiropractor will create a customized treatment plan to fit your needs.

Are Chiropractors Safe?

When performed by a trained and licensed chiropractor, chiropractic treatment is completely safe. Chiropractors have the knowledge necessary to perform adjustments and treatments the correct way and must hold specific licenses and certificates to do so. Any complications arising from chiropractic adjustments are extremely rare.

How Does Chiropractic Adjustment Work?

Chiropractic adjustment realigns your spine through manipulation which causes the structures in your back or neck to relax. This improves the overall function of your spine and nervous system, reducing or relieving pain.

There are many different ways to perform chiropractic adjustments. At Proactive, we use “crack-free” methods to provide chiropractic adjustments. For example, we use special tools such as an activator and an ArthroStim to adjust your spine.

Who Pays for a Chiropractor After a Car Accident?

If you have experienced a car accident, you shouldn’t wait to reach out to a chiropractor. The law in North Carolina requires auto liability policies and MedPay to cover chiropractic care. Was your accident caused by someone else? The state-required uninsured motorist coverage covers chiropractic treatment, regardless of whether or not the other driver had insurance.
