With today’s heavy workloads, the standard two-day weekend seems too short a break from the stress of the rat race. Weekend Warriors, however, refuse to let this precious time go to waste. But that of course, can lead to serious injuries.
These warriors fill their leisure days with activities like cross-fit, jogging, and parkour, and take little or no break for rest.
Marathon stretches of time sitting at a desk contrasted with excessive activity can cause significant stress on the body. Here are four of the most common weekend warrior injuries.
When people are go, go, go, without any rest period, there is a high chance of burnout. This can lead to poor performance, and stress on the heart. If you find yourself feeling tired and exhausted rather than pumped after your activities, your body could be telling you it’s time to rest.
Speaking of burnout, Weekend Warriors are prone to sunburns and other solar ailments. Because warriors spend their days predominantly participating in outdoor activities, there is increased UV exposure, which, according to the World Health Organization, “may result in acute and chronic health effects on the skin, eye, and immune system. Sunburn (erythema) is the best-known acute effect of excessive UV radiation exposure.
Over the longer term, UV radiation induces degenerative changes in cells of the skin, fibrous tissue and blood vessels leading to premature skin aging, photodermatoses and actinic keratoses. Another long-term effect is an inflammatory reaction of the eye. In the most serious cases, skin cancer and cataracts can occur.” Take the necessary precautions, such as wearing sunscreen and sunglasses.
Increased exposure to the sun also causes people to perspire, and that water loss that can lead to dehydration. When dehydration becomes severe it leads to headaches, dizziness, and confusion, which can make a person more prone to other forms of injury. Remember to re-hydrate frequently when you’re active.
4. Fractures & Muscle Spasms
Weekend Warriors who are dehydrated with their mental faculties exhausted, can become uncoordinated. This may cause them to fall prey to easily preventable injuries, such as fractures, slipped disks, or muscle spasms. This will not only put a halt on their weekend warrior status, it might also reduce their earning potential if the injury proves serious.
