It can happen in any number of ways: you could be playing golf or basketball, you could be lifting a heavy box, or you pick up your child or grandchild incorrectly. Suddenly, you’ve got pain in your lower back. You’re sore and it hurts to move. What do you do?
When you’re in pain, you don’t want to follow a bunch of complicated steps to make yourself feel better. As it turns out, you don’t need to. Read on to learn what you should do when you’ve hurt your lower back.
Get into a Pain-Relieving Position
If you’ve just injured your lower back, you probably don’t feel like moving much. Before you decide you’ll just be stationary for the immediate future, pull up a chair.
The chair isn’t for sitting on, though. Lie down on the floor and put your legs on the chair. If it’s more comfortable, put a pillow underneath your legs.
This position can relieve your discomfort because it takes the pressure off of your lower back. You should stay in this position for five to 25 minutes at a time. It might take a day or two of rest to completely relieve your lower back pain. Don’t rest any longer than that – too much rest can weaken your muscles, which can make your recovery slower. Walk around for a few minutes every hour, even if it hurts. The walking will exercise your muscles a bit.
Other Steps You Can Take
Another step you can take is to apply a heating pad to the affected area. Heat can relax the muscles and make your back feel better.
Some people use an ice pack as opposed to a heating pad. The goal of the ice pack is to numb the area so that the pain isn’t as noticeable.
Call a Chiropractor
Your chiropractor should be the first person you call when you injure your lower back. Chiropractors are specially trained for just this situation.
A chiropractor uses his or her hands to adjust the body’s joints. When you visit a chiropractor, he or she will adjust the joints in your lower back. This will bring your spine into better alignment. It also reduces the inflammation of surrounding tissues. As a result, you’ll be pain-free without drugs.
The chiropractor will also prescribe exercises for you to do that will complement the treatment and strengthen your back muscles.
