• hurt in car accident, physio or chiropractor?

This scenario might sound familiar: you’re driving along, minding your own business, when out of nowhere, you’re rear-ended. Or maybe you’re t-boned. In any event, your car has sustained serious damage, and you didn’t come out of the experience unscathed, either. You’re suffering from whiplash. So, who do you see – a physiotherapist or a chiropractor? Read on to learn what’s the best choice for you.

    What Chiropractors and Physiotherapists Do

In order to understand whether physiotherapy or chiropractic treatments are better for you, it’s important to know what chiropractors and physiotherapists do.

Chiropractors diagnose and treat mechanical disorders in the musculoskeletal system. Physiotherapists don’t diagnose – they focus on providing treatment of musculoskeletal injuries.

Who Should You See After a Car Accident?

After a car accident, you’re in pain and in shock. You’re most likely also receiving a great deal of advice from well-intentioned friends, family, and colleagues. That advice is probably also conflicting. “See a chiropractor!” “Don’t see a chiropractor – you need physiotherapy!” What should you do?

For a start, listen to their recommendations and assess them according to what’s in your best interest. Also, unless these people have been in your situation, they might not know exactly what the right thing for you is.

Bear in mind that going to a chiropractor might result in faster care. To go to a physiotherapist, you’ll need a referral from your primary care physician. It might take a while until the physiotherapist has time to see you.

Secondly, a chiropractor is trained to provide personalized care. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Your chiropractor will examine you carefully to determine what your injuries are and their extent. In addition, chiropractic care is holistic in nature. That means that chiropractors look at your whole body, not just your back or neck. The treatment they prescribe helps you as a whole feel better (and not just in the short run).

Thirdly, you should be aware that if left untreated or not treated properly, pain from whiplash or other injuries stemming from your car accident can last for years. You might not be able to receive the long-term care you need from a physiotherapist, because your referral might only cover a certain number of sessions. There’s a better chance that a chiropractor can provide you with the follow-up care that you need so that you can heal and return to an active, healthy life.

What If You’re Not in Pain after the Accident?

Let’s say that after your car accident, you’re not in any pain. You’re able to walk around, move your neck, stretch, even do jumping jacks.

That doesn’t mean that you haven’t been injured. Within 24 hours, you might start to feel the effects of the accident. Even if you don’t feel any pain immediately after a collision, don’t turn down a medical assessment. And you should most certainly see your chiropractor. He or she will examine you and determine whether you’ve sustained an injury and how serious it is.

Turn to an Experienced Chiropractor After You’ve Been in a Car Accident

If you’ve been in an automobile accident, a chiropractor can help you recover from painful injuries such as whiplash. He or she can provide the long-term follow-up care you need that will ensure you heal properly, and a chiropractor treats the whole person, not just particular body parts.

Our experienced chiropractor, Dr. Alec Khlebopros, practices a wealth of services, treatment options, and procedures that help to restore patients to their healthy selves.

  • It is insightful to know that even if you don’t feel pain after the accident something could still be wrong. Getting checked out by a doctor is important after an injury. My cousin would love knowing this as he looks into going to a physiotherapist.

  • Before I read this article, I thought that a chiropractor was the solution for most types of joint problems. Also, I did not know that you need a primary care doctors referral to see a physiotherapist. I was recently in a car accident and have a lot of pain, I’ll follow your advice and see a chiropractor and if it doesn’t work to see a physiotherapist.

  • Thank you for pointing out that you are going to need to listen to the recommendations from the therapist. My husband was just in a car accident and I think he could benefit from physiotherapy. I’ll have to do some research and find the best person in our area.

  • I think that if I were experiencing any pain after an accident, I would want to go and see a doctor. That way, I can be sure that nothing serious happened to me. I’d just be sure to go and see a professional when it comes to something like this.
