• Did You Hurt Your Back Wrapping Presents

The holidays can be hard on you mentally and physically.

While organizing events with family and friends and deciding what to give as gifts are stressful, your body may complain about the hours of rushing around malls and time spent bent over presents that need wrapping. Here are some tips on how not to hurt your back while wrapping all those holiday gifts:

Keep frequently-used materials close to you

Reaching across the table for scissors or tape could strain your neck or back muscles. If materials are closer to you, you’ll also be able to wrap more efficiently.

    Don’t sit on the floor

Gift wrapping on the floor causes you to spend hours leaning forward while seated on a hard surface. As the American Chiropractic Association points out, your posture will suffer, and so will your neck and back. Try using a table instead where you can sit up straight.

Be careful when dealing with large and/or heavy gifts

Large presents can be heavy, and bending and lifting is a major cause of back pain. You may want to ask for help lifting particularly heavy or awkward items, and minimizing the amount of wrapping required is also a good idea. If an item is particularly difficult to wrap, you could consider just using a bow.

    Take breaks and stretch

Wrapping presents often results in holding uncomfortable positions for long periods of time, which can result in a lot of stiffness in the neck and back. To help mitigate these negative effects, try taking breaks to rest and change position. According to the American Chiropractic Association, “there is no ‘ideal’ position for wrapping gifts”, so shifting around is your best bet for minimizing discomfort. Stretching can also keep your muscles from getting too stiff. The American Chiropractic Association recommends stretching the opposites (for example, if wrapping presents has you leaning forward, stretch backward).

    Treating your holiday injuries

Regardless of how careful you are, you may still end up hurting your back while wrapping gifts. Visiting a chiropractor could reduce your pain, help with recovery, and rejuvenate you for the holiday schedule ahead.
