Chiropractors are known for being able to help with spinal problems, but this is not the full extent of potential benefits. Chiropractic treatments can work on many other areas of the body and different types of ailments as well, often in surprising ways. But can a chiropractor help with a bad headache?
The short answer is often yes.
The long answer involves the varying kinds of headaches and possible treatments. Headaches manifest in many forms, and specialized treatment can be required for positive results.
Different headache types respond to different treatments.
Some headaches can be indicators of other health problems, though many are the issue in and of themselves. The American Migraine Foundation lists 23 types of headaches. Their website primarily recommends taking medication for certain types of headaches, including basilar-type migraines, and sufferers of trigeminal neuralgia may even require surgery, but tension headaches, for example, may respond to a wider range of treatments. The foundation explains that some headaches can even occur because of overuse of headache medications; medication overuse is actually “the most common cause of chronic daily headaches.” In such cases, use of medication may have to be tapered off, and physical therapy can be an effective outpatient therapy.
What can a chiropractor do?
Similarly, a chiropractor can assist you in more than one way. According to the American Chiropractic Association, spinal manipulation is only of several forms of treatment a chiropractor can use to reduce headache pain. Spinal manipulation and other chiropractic adjustments can help with headaches that originate in the neck and tension headaches, as the treatment focuses on improving spinal function and reducing the stress on your system.
A chiropractor can also provide advice regarding nutrition, supplements, ergonomics (including posture), useful exercises, and relaxation techniques. These recommendations can be helpful for preventing or lessening future issues with headaches, as following a chiropractor’s advice in these areas can “relieve the recurring joint irritation and tension in the muscles of the neck and upper back.”
