Do you know what’s good for your back? Common wisdom isn’t always so wise, and some myths about back pain can end up harming your spine. Luckily, we’re here to set the facts straight. These five common beliefs about back pain are actually myths:

    1. Being physically active means I won’t experience back pain

While physical activity can minimize your risk of experiencing back pain, some sports can cause back pain. Golf, volleyball, and gymnastics are all sports cited by Spine Health as causing back pain, and around 8 out of 10 people will experience back pain at some point, for whatever reason.

    2. If tests don’t reveal a specific medical issue, my back pain must be all in my head

Just because you don’t have a diagnosable problem doesn’t mean the pain isn’t real; back pain can be caused by a wide variety of things. You may also have another condition that is causing the back pain indirectly. According to Spine Health, depression and sleeplessness are important factors to consider. Furthermore, while not usually the case, persistent back pain could be related to a tumour or infection. Taking back pain seriously is important for your comfort and your health.

    3. Bed rest is best

While bed rest can help with a recent injury or strain, but in many cases, spending days in bed can make back pain worse. Sometimes the spine needs movement in order to keep from hurting; in fact, exercise can often prevent back pain,

    4. Back pain comes from injuries

While an injury can definitely cause back pain, so can other factors. Other causes of back pain, include disc degeneration, diseases, infections, and even inherited conditions.

    5. Heat helps my back get better

While applying heat can relax your muscles and temporarily reduce pain, it doesn’t fix any underlying problems. Getting rid of or reducing back pain long term often requires a rehab routine or pain management program, including possible lifestyle changes.
